Starting from the former mining village of Buggerru, this walking trip explores some of the most beautiful and remote areas in South West Sardinia. Pristine bays, wild long sandy beaches and some of the highest sand dunes in Europe. A truly spectacular landscape quite unique in Western Europe. 1st day: tour start day
Transfer or independent arrival to Buggerru, in the South West of the island.
2nd day: Cala Domestica (12 km/4h)
You start on a high! From the sleepy mining village of Buggerru, a trail rises to a limestone plateau above dramatic coastline and reaches Cala Domestica, one of the most picturesque bays of southern Sardinia. Return to the village following an inland trail through hills covered in Mediterranean macchia.
3rd day: Capo Pecora (16 km/5½h)
After a short transfer to the seaside village of Portixeddu, you start walking towards the headland of Capo Pecora with its coarse, lightcoloured sand beaches, flanked by steep cliffs that plunge into the sea. The routes continues along sceneries of rare beauty to reach la Vedetta, a small WWII fort, where you can enjoy the view of the long wild sandy beach of Scivu and the Costa Verde in the background. Your base tonight is a lovely agriturismo serving fresh local food.
4th day: Antas (14 km/3½h)
The route starts from the suggestive Punic and Roman temple of Antas (Fluminimaggiore) heading North towards the caves of “Su Mannau”, where ancient Sardinian populations practised their water cults. After restoring forces at the Pubusinu water spring, you go through the tiny hamlet of Fluminimaggiore walking finally towards your agriturismo, where fresh local food is awaiting for you.
5th day: Fighezia – Sciopadroxiu (9 km/2h)
This day is dedicated to the ancient mining past of Sardinia. Following old mining trials you will reach Ingortosu, once a flourishing town, and Naracauli with the powerful and suggestive ruins of the old washery.
6th day: Piscinas – Freedom day (8 km/2h)
Today you are free to explore Piscinas, famous for its celebrated sand dunes, among the highest in Europe. Some dunes are covered by the Mediterranean scrub, others still alive and modelled by the mistral, the prevailing wind in this part of the island. It is not uncommon to spot Sardinian deer coming out of the bush at sunset.
7th day: Sciopadroxiu – Montevecchio (15 km/3½h)
Hike on the old trials miners used to get to Montevecchio, formerly the biggest mining town in Sardinia. The route develops along rolling hills covered in Mediterranean vegetation that offer a spectacular scenery
especially in Spring time.
8th day: end of tour
After breakfast, end of services.
